The Nursing Mother's Companion

Author: Kathleen Huggins
Binding Type: Softbound

Product Condition: Used

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Review
The real strength of this book is the accessibility of the information. A new mother can easily find answers to her questions and concerns within a few minutes. Also, it seems more 'mainstream' than some of the other books on the market, yet presents information on topics such as toddler nursing or co-sleeping in a non-threatening way. --Doula Magazine

This is an excellent book, particularly for first-time nursers. You know how they say the most important thing about nursing is relaxing? Well, it would be impossible to read this book and have an anxiety attack at the same time. The tone is very reassuring, the chapters well organized. The book is thorough-- and never gets on the breast-or-bust bandwagon. --Parenting

[Kathleen Huggins]'s reassuring, practical suggestions make this book an excellent informational companion. --Publishers Weekly

Product Description

Super Chef: The Making of the Great Modern Restaurant Empires

Author: Juliette Rossant

Hardbound

Brand New

Additional DescriptionMore Details

This plodding group biography traces the careers and personal lives of chefs Wolfgang Puck, Charlie Palmer, Todd English, Mary Sue Milliken, Susan Feniger and Tom Colicchio. Rossant, who has covered chefs for Forbes, begins unevenly by failing to define in her introduction what a "super chef" is, merely stating, "Most chefs who reach Super Chef level are well liked, hardworking, and irrepressibly optimistic people." She dedicates a chapter to each subject-except for Milliken and Feniger, who work as a team and are covered together-before reaching the conclusion that the hot topic among chefs today is branding. A glossary with definitions of terms like "Fast Food Restaurant" and "Hoisin Sauce" provides a puzzling finish. Rossant's style is often awkward ( "It was the height of disco, and a few months after his divorce Wolfgang met Barbara Lazaroff at a discotheque"). Although she discusses the chefs' failures-e.g., Palmer recalls a partnership in a dairy that went poorly-she glosses over unpleasant events, dismissing Colicchio's dispute with his Gramercy Tavern employer, Danny Meyer, over the opening of Craft, a New York restaurant, in a couple of paragraphs. Rossant conveys coziness with her subjects by using their first names, even referring to Milliken and Feniger as "the Girls," and frequently resorts to "some" sourcing ("Some have said that the 1999 Grimes article in the New York Times marked a serious embarrassment if not decline for Charlie"), thus never appearing to pass negative judgment. Even the inclusion of a transcript of English's MTV appearance and romance gossip fail to sizzle. Photos.

Smart Women Finish Rich: 9 Steps to Achieving Financial Security and Funding Your Dreams

Author: David Bach
Paperback
Brand New

Additional DescriptionMore Details

David Bach's Smart Women Finish Rich is a homage to the financial wisdom of his grandmother; it's also an excellent foundation for women who are starting to get their financial lives in order. Bach's approach to money management is rooted in years of investment seminars for women and his work as senior vice president of investments at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. During that time he recognized that "people rarely know what is truly driving them emotionally when it comes to money." In response, Bach has written a guide to money management for women based on his belief that "financial planning is as much an emotional issue as it is an intellectual one." Are you considering your values in your work and investing? What part of your daily work is driven by your goals in life? Is your latte habit preventing you from accumulating substantial wealth? Bach addresses tax strategies, wills, insurance, retirement plans, and investments in a highly accessible manner. Smart Women Finish Rich ably bridges the gap between simple saving strategies and preparing for widowhood and financial independence. --Brad Doll

Secrets Of The Baby Whisperer For Toddlers

Author: Tracy Hogg and Melinda Bleu
Binding Type: Softbound

Product Condition: Used

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Review:
Imagine a cheeky, less starchy Mary Poppins in the trenches with you and your toddler. British trained nurse and childcare consultant Tracy Hogg draws upon the key ideas in her bestselling, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and applies them to those magical and challenging years between infancy and preschool.

Hogg offers parents of toddlers clear theory and techniques described in a supportive, crisp tone, often addressing parents as "luv" or "ducky." Before trying any techniques, she urges parents to "love the toddler you have" by understanding his or her unique temperament, gifts, and special needs.

That said, Hogg introduces specific tools for engaging and managing toddlers. These include "H.E.L.P." (hold back, explain, limit, praise); "R&R" (routines and rituals to create structure and celebration), and "behavior rehearsals" (a plan to prepare toddlers for new experiences). Other chapters focus on "respectful intervention" to avoid acting out and plans to protect parents' private time. By seasoning her advice with anecdotes, sidebars, quizzes, and abundant good humor, Hogg offers companionship and common sense for parents during the toddler years. --Barbara Mackoff

Raising Unselfish Children in a Self-Absorbed World (Paperback)

Author: Jill Rigby

Paperback

Brand New

Additional DescriptionMore Details

"I'm so tired of hearing parents on and off the air introducing their children by telling me, 'I have two "beautiful" children.' I always tell them that beautiful children don't change the world but 'good' children do. This book will teach parents how to nurture children into becoming decent, compassionate adults."Dr. Laura Schlessinger--international radio talk-show host; author of The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage

"Jill Rigby gets to our heart's desire of parenting with this crucial message. She brings practical advice and hope in the midst of a very self-centered culture. This is a book I will recommend to everyone."Jim Burns, PhD--president, HomeWord; author of Confident Parenting and Creating an Intimate Marriage

"Selfishness is a key to lifetime unhappiness. Jill has given us an important reminder to save our kids from its clutches. The message of this book can be remembered in this thought: think of the kind of adults you can't stand to be around and don't let your child become one of them!"Dr. Henry Cloud -- author of The Secret Things of God, 9 Things You Really Must Do, and coauthor of Boundaries

"Tired of the epidemic of selfishness in today's world? Jill Rigby will help you do your part with your kids to rid the world of selfishness. Parents beware--she places the responsibility squarely on your shoulders. Take her message to heart. Your kids will be glad you did."Dr. Kevin Leman, author of Making Children Mind without Losing Yours
Product Description
Child expert Jill Rigby reveals the dangers of the self-esteem parenting philosophy and offers an alternative approach that teaches children to respect both themselves and others.

After decades of experimenting with child-focused parenting, parents are beginning to realize that the result is often self-centered children who tend toward narcissism, selfishness, mediocrity, and dysfunction. Rigby espouses a new goal of parenting: gently bumping children off self-center and teaching them to be unselfish givers instead. Raising Unselfish Children in a Self-Absorbed World dares to revisit the values of compassion, forgiveness, thanksgiving, and unselfishness and insists that we can instill these values in our children.

With her encouraging approach, Rigby helps parents realize it's never too late to change their children's point of view and equip them to interact with kindness and respect in a world outside themselves. Teaching concepts, such as developing a passion for compassion, learning to give by forgiving, and filling every day with thanksgiving, Raising Unselfish Children in a Self-Absorbed World offers a new paradigm for parenting -- one that educates the heart and teaches moms and dads how to parent with a new end in mind.

Parenting by The Book: Biblical Wisdom for Raising Your Child [Bargain Price] (Hardcover)

Author: John Rosemond

Hardcover

Brand New

Additional DescriptionMore Details

"John Rosemond is one of the few psychologists I've ever met who always makes sense. This is the best common-sense guide to parenting I've read in a long time." -- Dr. Kevin Leman, author of Making Children Mind without Losing Yours

"If you think 'new' is always better, this is not the book for you. John does all parents a huge service by skillfully illuminating the timeless wisdom of Scripture that has served generations in raising healthy, happy, obedient human beings. I was struck, both as a parent and a professional, at how simply and practically John presents these biblical truths for mothers and fathers. Parenting by The Book could start a parenting revolution, and I pray it does for the sake of our children." -- Glenn T. Stanton, director, Global Family Formation Studies at Focus on the Family and author of Marriage on Trial and My Crazy Imperfect Christian Family

"Truly a masterpiece. John's concepts are consistent with both biblical principles and the best parenting research. As such, they work! A must-read for parents and professionals who work with parents." -- DuBose Ravenel, MD, FAAP, pediatrician and emeritus member of Focus on the Family medical advisor team
Product Description
Picture respectful, responsible, obedient children who entertain themselves without television or video games, do their own homework, and have impeccable manners. A pie-in-the-sky fantasy? Not so, says family psychologist and bestselling author John Rosemond. Any parent who so desires can grow children who fit that description -- happy, emotionally healthy children who honor their parents and their families with good behavior and do their best in school.

In the 1960s, American parents stopped listening to their elders when it came to child rearing and began listening instead to professional experts. Since then, raising children has become fraught with anxiety, stress, and frustration. The solution, says John, lies in raising children according to biblical principles, the same principles that guided parents successfully for hundreds of years. They worked then, and they still work now!

Through his nationally syndicated newspaper column and eleven books, John has been helping families raise happy, well-behaved children for more than thirty years. In Parenting by The Book, which John describes as both a "mission and a ministry," he brings parents back to the uncomplicated basics. Herein fi nd practical, Bible-based advice that will help you be the parent you want to be, with children who will be, as the Bible promises, "a delight to your soul" (Pro. 29-17). As a bonus, John also promises to make you laugh along the way.
